FUNNY PEOPLE

FUNNY PEOPLE: NOT ALL THAT FUNNY FOR AN APATOW FILM

Yes, there is the trademark crude humor, but much less pot smoking in this almost dramatic film by Judd Apatow. We meet George Simmons (Adam Sandler) a comedian very much like Sandler who has had comic success in the movies and the comedy circuit. George learns he is sick and has to undergo experimental therapy to try to reverse the condition. With his concerns and faced with his mortality, he meets and then hires Ira (Seth Rogen) a struggling comic desperate for a chance to make it.
Working for George is different because he needs more companionship than fetching coffee and the two become friends. This movie was much more serious, tender and dramatic than what we've seen from Apatow (yes, I'm using his name 30 times in this review). We not only see the real life vantage of being a celebrity and dealing with life as a public figure, but we also see what havoc that can wreck on a personal life and ability to make relationships. It is a genuine film with real moments (the peanut butter game) and real emotions. It went on a bit too long for me but it wasn't unpleasant to sit through. Loved the cameos that are too numerous to mention. A real excellent film Judd Apatow!
  • George (Simmons) and Ira (Wright) are named after the composer/lyricist brothers George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin.
  • Judd Apatow and Adam Sandler were old roommates. The footage seen in the opening sequence was recorded back then. Sandler would regularly make prank phone calls and one day Apatow decided to start filming them.
  • The plot of the film and its characters are loosely based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby.

Big Bite: A very adult film and easy to connect with.
