LAKE CITY

LAKE CITY: YES, DAVE MATTHEWS CAN ACT

When there’s no where else to go, go home. So home is where loser Billy (Troy Garity) heads when things get rough in the city, with his girlfriend’s son in tow. Being the eternal warm motherly woman, Maggie (Sissy Spacek) is nonplused when she arrives home to find the son she hasn’t spoken to in a year raiding her refrigerator. Slowly the story unfolds and we discover why Billy is on the run, why the kid is with him and how the events of the past can bring this new family back together.
I really liked this story and even though Spacek was the only character I liked at first, I liked getting to know and eventually liking the others. It was much more suspenseful of a movie than I originally thought, but also a character study. It was a pretty original script and the lack of star power (sorry Sissy) made it seem more realistic. Yes, Dave Matthews is in this film as a bad guy and not only can he act, he does it well. Along the lines of a zillion other musician to actor types, I imagine we’ll be seeing more of him. Rebecca Romijn, Drea De Matteo and Keith Carradine add a nice cushion to the other main characters. It was a pretty picture, full of autumn reds and golds and had a warm glow that mirrored what home is supposed to be. Only a few scenes find it fast paced, while the rest of the story took its own sweet time to bloom. Nothing shattering, but good solid performances across the board made this a fine film to watch.
Bite: Balanced cast and beautiful scenery make this a good film to watch.
