THE HANGOVER

THE HANGOVER PRESENTS A GOOD REASON TO DRINK

So first we had 'chick flicks'. Now we have 'bromances'. Judd Apatow has owned the market with 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, but now it has spread. The Hangover is the latest in this vein brought to us by Todd Phillips (Old School). Four friends (three friends and a soon to be brother in law) head out for a blowout party before one of them gets married. In an interesting twist, we wake up with them the next morning and very much like them, we want to know what happened. The twist is that no one remembers and the groom to be is missing. It is a perfect set up for a caper comedy.
However, they don’t quite pull it off. I’m not sure if it was the casting (but Bradley Cooper is perfect and pretty!) but I just didn’t find it a funny film as a whole. There were lines that were funny and scenes that could have been funny. Ken Jeong (Senior Chang) as Mr. Chow was funny, but just a little off place. I liked the Rainman references but none of it built up enough head to make it really off the charts. It had the look and feel of a funny movie, but without the laughs. The ending was a bit cheesy and predictable, getting the groom there on time. Even the pay back of Stu getting his voice at the end fell flat. I really wanted this to work. I really wanted it to be funny. I really wanted to laugh, but it just didn’t happen.

½ Bite: Interesting to watch, maybe funny enough to watch for the few scenes, the lines delivered here or there but not a winner
