MY LIFE IN RUINS: MY BIG FAT ROMANCE ON A BUS
Truly a sweet and unexpected romantic comedy... Georgia (Nia Vardalos) is a teacher in Athens who isn't teaching but acting as a tour guide trying to push her knowledge onto a big group of wacky, ungrateful tourists who just want to go to the beach and buy souvenirs. She has lost the joy she once had for Greece and now just follows pathetically along as her tourists begin to teach her. They help her find balance between her love of the academic and love of life.
One tourist in particular, Irv (Richard Dreyfuss) pushes her and eggs her on to prove his point that life is wasted on the youth and sometimes the obvious is indeed the right answer. This is a simple and straightforward film, nothing hidden, nothing overly clever, but very well done. It is funny and the caricatures of the tourists are right on the money. The big pool scene toward the end of the film is great. Romance is sweet and lovely, which is exactly what this film is. Vardalos gives a performance that is smart and tender and the timing is exactly perfect so that they payoff is warmly felt. Dreyfuss is perfect as the magical Irv. I’m ready to go find my Greek God!
BITE: Very enjoyable and funny movie. I like the simple and fresh appproach.
