THE COVE: OUT-HORRORS HORROR FILMS
Sea World will never be the same again. This film is shocking and horrible and unbelievably true. In Japan, dolphins are being corralled, bought by the various institutions that use captive dolphins for hundreds of thousands of dollars and then forced into an inescapable cove where they are harpooned and stabbed. Boatloads of dolphins are carted off and the water is so red with their blood it looks like a bad horror movie effect. This documentary is well put together and the plan to capture this coup de grĂ¢s on film is nothing short of a tightly written and produced Hollywood feature.
When visiting in Key West in 2005 I had the opportunity (for a price) to swim with the dolphins. It sounded magical for a girl who was raised watching Flipper, but once there it was sterile and sad the way the dolphins only had so much room to swim. When watching the dolphins swim wild in this film, I felt nauseated remembering my swim and regret taking part of this terrible abuse. It may be a part of another culture to eat things I wouldn't, as they sell the meat and feed it to school children as some may argue that eating meat from any animal is wrong. The point is the cruelty and suffering these animals go through is heartbreaking and needless. This is a hard film to watch, but an important point to be made in efforts for things to change.
Big bite: A terrible subject much needing attention presented in a smart and crucial way.
