Claire: So, do you play sports?
Kyle: No, I'm a big spaz like my dad.
Lance Clayton: Well, I was in the dive team in college.
Lance Clayton: Well, I was in the dive team in college.
Kyle: Diving's not really a sport, it's falling.
Written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait, this clever and original film has brain and beauty. Filmed in Seattle, Robin Williams is Lance Clayton, a single father and a teacher living a quiet existance with his dickhead of a son, Lyle.
Lance Clayton: Come on now, Kyle, you must be passionate about something.
Kyle: You wanna know what I like? I like looking at vaginas.
Lance Clayton: Oh.
Kyle: All day long.
Honestly, this is the first character, even as somebody's son who is totally unlikeable and has no redeemable qualities. Nonetheless, when Clayton finds his son in a questionable situation, he covers up his actions first to help his son and then to help his students and ultimately to help himself. Daryl Sabara is Lyle and does a fantastic job of being shallow and unlikeable. He doesn't play him over the top, but just enough to make it totally believable. Williams does a great job as Clayton. There is a great deal of dark comedy and makes the film both funny and dramatic. Not many actors could pull both off so well. He is outstanding. He also does full frontal nudity in this film. Look for a cameo from Bobcat as the limodriver. Great use of lyrics from Under Pressure that foreshadows a great ending. This was really and all around excellent movie.Big bite: Clever and original movie, excellent acting all around, even the supporting cast.
